Late notice, but I wanted to let all my Missoula friends know about a great show tomorrow night at the Top Hat. Rogue Valley, Chris Koza‘s Minneapolis band, will be performing with Missoula band Butter at the Top Hat on Friday, 1/20, at 10 pm. Show is 21+. Chris is the new Music Director for “9 Pieces of Peace”. His music is great. Pass the word!

Betsy Mulligan-Dague and Dan Gallagher, two important people in this film, have come together to record a discussion about finding common ground. They inspire me every day. To listen, see the link below.
A Conversation Between a Peace Activist and a Vietnam Veteran
Length: 00:59:01
During this program, Betsy Mulligan-Dague, executive director of the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center in Missoula, Montana, and Dan Gallagher, Vietnam Veteran and veteran’s advocate, talk about the possibilities for finding common ground in conflicting points of view.

I love it when an email message starts this way: “It’s my pleasure to inform you that the Board of Humanities Montana has voted to fund your grant application, ’9 Pieces of Peace.’ ” I’m jumping for joy. This was a phase 3 video and production grant. It’s amazing to have so many individuals and organizations supporting the film. It would not be happening without you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
P.S. Quick progress update: We have transcribed all interviews and are now working on b-roll images. We’ll start the first rough cut in the next month or so.

I can’t believe that it has been almost two months since our shoot in May! We had a great week in Missoula and I think we are done with 95% of the shooting. Since May, we’ve been transcribing all the interviews, which takes a looong time. We’ve had a few hard-working interns doing a few hours at a time. Next step is to focus on a few grant applications to raise funds to keep the momentum going. Once all the transcripts are done, we can start editing and creating the first rough cut. This is the challenge of finding the right film in the 50+ hours of footage. I had originally hoped to edit a rough cut by this fall, but now I think it’s more realistic to give myself more time to not rush this important step. We’ll see…

We’re deep into planning for our next week of shooting, May 6th to 12th. May 8th is the 10-year anniversary of when the Missoula Peace Sign came down! The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center is planning a day of activities to bring people together, visiting the 9 pieces and then culminating in events on Waterworks Hill. Contact the Peace Center for all the details. And if you want to hear more about the film, stop in at the north side location of the Kettle House at 6 pm on May 7th. Our crew will be there to catch up with all our friends in Missoula.

We don’t send it out very often, just when there is news to share. (If you want the most recent issue, send me an email at jan@quietislandfilms.com.)

We also are so excited about a recent grant from the LEAW Family Foundation. Thanks especially to Science Woman Leslie Millar for making this possible! With this grant, we have reached $25,000 in our fundraising! We will use it toward our upcoming week of shooting in Missoula in May. The 9 Pieces of Peace momentum is growing!!

Last week, I received an amazing phone call telling me that I’d been granted $10,000 from the Prop Foundation in Missoula, Montana! I was floored. This donation will make the second week of shooting for “9 Pieces of Peace” possible. I’ve been hoping to shoot in May, the 10th anniversary of when the Missoula Peace Sign came down. But I didn’t know how I was going to pay for it. Now I know!! Special thanks to Father Hogan, the angel who made this possible. Last November, I was interviewing him for the film. After the interview, he offered to pass info onto “some people he knows who care deeply about both art and peace.” Then the call came last week. I am deeply indebted to him, as well as all the donors who have helped make this film possible.

Just heard that I was accepted to pitch at the 2011 Big Sky Pitch Session on February 17th! This is an opportunity to present my documentary film, 9 Pieces of Peace, to a panel of potential funders during the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (BSDFF) in Missoula, Montana. I’m very excited, since money is the magic ingredient needed to finish the film. Now it’s time to work on updating the trailer and preparing the pitch!
The pitch session will be held in the UC Theater on the University of Montana campus with a live audience of filmmakers, industry representatives, and students.
Here’s more info about the event from the BSDFF staff:
